Three Different Attachment Styles

Researchers have found that the quality of our romantic relationship is linked with the quality of our attachment or emotional bond to caregivers such as our parents during infancy and childhood (Santrock, 2007).  Like our parents, romantic partners can give us a secure base to which we can return and obtain comfort and security in stressful times (Collins & Feeney, 2004).  According to attachment theory, researchers learn attachment styles as infants and then carry it forward as a working model, a sort of blueprint, for our relationships as adults (Atkinson & Goldberg, 2004; Egeland & Calson, 2004).

Three Attachment Styles

Experiences by Ainsworth (1979) identified three attachment styles between infants and      a caregiver. They are (1) Secure attachment style: The caregiver is responsive to the             infant’s needs and shows positive emotions when interacting with the infant.  Securely          attached infants trust their caregiver, don’t fear that they will be abandoned, and      explore            their world in positive ways (2) Avoidant attachment style: The caregiver is distant or             rejecting, and fails to respond to the infant’s bids to establish intimacy. Avoidant infants    suppress their desire to be close to their caregivers (3) ambivalent      attachment style: The             caregiver is inconsistently available and when present often overbearing with affection;     as a result, the infants can’t predict when and how their caregiver will respond       Ambivalent infants may cling anxiously to the caregiver and then  fight against the closeness by pushing away (Santrock, 2007)

Influence of attachment styles on subsequent romantic relationships

Cindy Hazan and Phillip Shaver have examined the continuity between childhood attachment and romantic relationships. They interviewed adults about their relationships with their parent as they were growing up and about their current romantic relationship. They found that the adults who report that they were securely attached to their parents as children are more likely to say that they have a secure attachment to their romantic partner that their adult counterparts who report having had an insecure attachment to their parent. (Santrock, 2007)

As adults who were securely attached to a caregiver in childhood find it easy to get closer to others and don’t worry much about becoming too dependent on someone or being abandoned.  As adults who had an avoidant attachment style in childhood find it difficult to develop intimate relationships. (Santrock, 2007)
