We live in a world that is filled with organizations that have “several characteristics which

makes them each unique.” (Trenholm, S., 6th ed.; 2011) It is without a doubt a must to have a

strong understanding of communication not just for the field of science, but for any field that a

person enters. Communication is not just one definition; it is a combination of many definitions

blended together.

The article

Being able to put ideas into words can be hard for some and easy for others, however in the

article “A tool kit for the real world” it explains that scientists while they can explain their ideas

to other scientists seem to have a rather difficult time doing the same for the public. A good

example of this would the television show “The Big Bang Theory” in which four scientists try

to explain what they do to a below college level girl in as simple a definition they can. The

same can be said for communication within an organization. If, an organization does not stop

and listen sometimes to the ideas of others or to the questions that are being asked, but to why,

they feel something works well then, an absence of interdependence may be because not join

the organization at all. Justin Mullins, a journalist, including for New Scientist, and co-runner of

“Write About Science”, put it best “Communication is important whatever you do.”

How they interconnect

No matter what type of organization I personally want to work for in the future, it has come

to my conclusion having not just a strong understanding or interpersonal and intrapersonal

communication, but organizational communication is a must when it comes to broadcast

communications not just for sales in which you have to sell the idea of how radio or television

marketing can increase customers, but you have to be able to sell yourself to the company, just

like scientists do once they figure out that they want to expand outside the academia. “Those

who are not able to engage with others and market themselves will not be able to successful in

the commercial world”, according to John McCulloch. However, by following a structurational

approach both scientists and I can learn what is the appropriate paths to communicate within

whatever organization or field we choose. Having a strong set of communication skills not

only will help within my field of broadcast communication, but it will also help by learning to

communicate effectively in organizations so that I avoid problems at work and at home.

Final thoughts

Throughout the article it explained that scientists have a difficult time not just within their

own organization, but in the outside world when it comes to expressing ideas and thoughts

to others. By having a strong understanding of how to present oneself and the ideas that are

important through verbal or written communication, not only will it help in understanding how

to express those thoughts and ideas effectively, but will give those within the organization some

insight in how to recognize and avoid inner office problems, allowing the organization to be

more effective and efficient in any type of communication field I or someone else decides to

pursue in the future once, we have the complete knowledge of how to properly communicate

ourselves to the hierarchy of the organization.
